Module 1

Enterprise Architecture

Module 1 sets the groundwork for IT leadership, combining two rigorous, 4-credit courses, GCOM 7790 and GCOM 7800, designed to build a strong foundation in Enterprise Architecture and extend into real-world digital innovation.

By completing Module 1, you will be able to:

  • Map current IT architectures and identify strategic gaps
  • Design robust, future-ready IT infrastructures
  • Analyze data and process flows for enhanced decision-making
  • Integrate cloud solutions and cybersecurity as part of your architecture
  • Develop architectural artifacts that resonate with both technical and business stakeholders

GCOM 7790: Enterprise Architecture (4 credits)

This course provides a broad foundation for understanding how information technology delivers business value. Enterprise architecture, databases, business processes, and networks are covered at a level of detail that is appropriate for IT managers. Students learn how to envision IT infrastructures and applications that meet the needs of the business enterprise and add economic value.

GCOM 7800: Architecting Digital Innovation (4 credits)

Building on the foundations in GCOM 7790, this course fosters insights into contemporary IT architecture trends. Topics include cybersecurity, cloud architectures, and emerging technologies. Students envision a digital innovation that adds business value to a real-world enterprise, describe it by means of several architectural artifacts (e.g., process and information models), and present it to a business and tech-savvy audience.

Skills You’ll Develop

  • Strategic IT planning: Analyze current (“as‑is”) infrastructures and develop future-state (“to‑be”) architecture roadmaps.
  • Data and process expertise: Use BPMN, ERDs, and Use Cases to improve operational requirements and information flows.
  • Security-aware design: Embed cybersecurity into architectural decisions to protect digital assets.
  • Infrastructure design fluency: Architect networks and cloud systems that fit organizational needs, balance cost, and ensure resilience.
  • Innovation articulation: Translate digital solutions into architectural diagrams, business-value propositions, and executive-ready presentations.

The Value to You and Your Organization

Module 1 equips you with a strategic, big-picture understanding of how technology drives business value. You’ll gain fluency across business, data, and infrastructure domains, allowing you to design secure, scalable systems and communicate solutions with both technical and executive teams.

For you, this means that you’ll emerge as a confident, forward-thinking digital leader—skilled at spotting operational gaps, designing innovative IT solutions, and driving transformation that makes a measurable impact.

For your organization, the return is immediate: stronger alignment between IT and business goals, smarter technology investments, and faster, more secure execution of digital strategies. You won’t just understand the architecture—you’ll help shape it.
