

Amanda P. Cowen began serving as the Interim John A. Griffin Dean of the McIntire School of Commerce on July 1, 2025. Dean Cowen is the Arthur B. and Claudia Cohen Bicentennial Eminent Professor of Commerce and has been a member of McIntire’s Management faculty since 2007. She previously served as McIntire’s Senior Associate Dean for Academic Programs and as the Academic Director of its M.S. in Global Commerce Program.
Dean Cowen holds a doctorate and M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and earned her A.B. in Economics from Dartmouth College. Her research interests center on corporate governance and strategic leadership, especially understanding how stakeholders interpret and respond to organizational failures or controversies. She is a former Associate Editor at Academy of Management Journal and continues to serve on the editorial boards of leading management journals.
Dean Cowen has taught courses on international corporate governance, corporate strategy, and organizational behavior at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In 2017, she was the recipient of an All-University Teaching Award at the University of Virginia. Before pursuing an academic career, Dean Cowen worked in consumer marketing at Time Inc. in New York City.
