At McIntire, we believe that global business requires a purposeful and nuanced perspective. The interconnected global marketplace demands leaders who are capable of strategically approaching challenges and adapting to many unfamiliar situations. As a student here, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the dynamic and complex international business landscape as you develop the intercultural skills necessary to deftly create value for organizations and positive change for diverse groups of people in communities throughout the world.

You'll build a solid foundation by focusing on the context in which global business operates, the interrelated systems and geopolitical structures that support it, the business practices that vary across regions, and developing an adaptable intercultural skill set.

Comparative Global Knowledge

History, beliefs, development, social practices, and many other factors all impact business. This comparative global knowledge often begins with developing an understanding of your own society within a global and comparative context, followed by further exploration of other regions—either while on Grounds or through one of McIntire’s world-class study-abroad programs. Opportunities abound to pursue further study into global issues, trends, processes, and systems as they pertain to global commercial enterprises.

Global Business Practices

Business can look quite different across national borders. And with that difference comes complexity, in which savvy business leaders can also thrive. Through what modes of entry might a company pursue new global markets for a global brand? How does this new market protect intellectual property? What are the implications for cross-border taxation on my global supply chain? How can we conduct business most responsibly, sustainably, and ethically in this country? Your global commerce curriculum will develop your understanding of the importance of approaching business opportunities through global, regional, and cultural frames of reference.

Intercultural Development and Adaptation

Being ready to face unfamiliar situations is a skill. Developing that ability is the result of engaging studies in the beliefs, customs, and social conventions of people and their diverse environments. Our programs prepare you to make sense of global markets—and the people who animate them—through immersive experiences that foster intercultural appreciation through a global business lens. You’ll study the issues, impact, and consequences of different perspectives and cultures on economies around the world.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to study abroad through McIntire. I shared several thoughtful conversations with my peers from around the globe, gaining a more nuanced understanding of both international business and university and professional life outside the U.S. Recognizing how an individual’s background shapes their beliefs and decisions is an incredibly important skill to possess in an interconnected world.

Study Abroad: Germany

The study-abroad experience enhanced my McIntire education by exposing me to lots of new people I never would’ve otherwise met. I met a ton of people from all parts of Europe who had very disparate opinions which were based in their upbringing and was able to learn more about those countries in the process. Pragmatically, it also expanded my network internationally, which is always useful too.

While abroad, I learned so much from my friends from other countries about their cultures, their languages, their beliefs, etc. Through conversations with them, I’ve learned new ways to think through problems and have gained a better understanding of the ways in which people with different backgrounds may think. I know that I can apply these life lessons to my education at McIntire, as well as to any future business career.

Being able to study abroad is an extremely humbling experience and provided a new perspective that I would not have gotten in the States. Coming out of this experience, I want to continue traveling the world and experiencing new cultures and traditions. There is so much out there in the world to discover, and I’m glad I was able to get a small taste of it through studying in Milan!

I was drawn to Singapore for its clean, colorful city life, and swayed by the metropolitan island nation’s convenient transportation, with access to beaches, jungles, and quality food at all hours of the day (I'm a big foodie!). I hoped I could truly explore all the city-state had to offer in a single semester, and that a Singaporean would agree that I saw all of Singapore.

The Global Immersion Experience was a preview into the global business world. We visited many brands and companies that shared how to successfully adapt, communicate, and further innovate across different markets. My biggest takeaway was the importance of cultural awareness and empathy. These qualities are essential to help business and people grow in today’s interconnected, global environment.
