M.S. in Commerce | Admissions

Requirements and Eligibility

While it is not anticipated that every candidate will exhibit all qualities, these characteristics inform the composition of each incoming class of students and align with McIntire’s overarching mission and educational goals.

Requirements

The M.S. in Commerce is designed specifically for candidates with a bachelor’s degree or undergraduate major in the liberal arts or STEM fields; candidates with undergraduate degrees or majors in business and business-related subjects are not eligible to enroll in the program. Candidates with bachelor’s degree conferred more than 18 months prior to matriculation are ineligible for admission.

Applicants must complete the following prerequisite courses prior to matriculation:

Introduction to Financial Accounting

Students should understand the basic framework of accounting, including underlying accounting concepts and constraints, that helps them in the preparation of financial records, financial statements, and analysis of the major financial statements.

UVA courses that satisfy the prerequisite for Introduction to Financial Accounting include: 

CGBM 2110: Accounting for Business 

Please note: COMM 2010: Introduction to Financial Accounting is no longer offered. Prior completion of COMM 2010 satisfies this prerequisite requirement.

Introduction to Microeconomics

Students should have gained an understanding of consumer and producer behavior, the nature of supply and demand, the different kinds of markets and how they function, welfare outcomes of consumers and producers, and the forces determining income distribution.

UVA courses that satisfy the prerequisite for Introduction to Microeconomics include: 

ECON 2010: Introduction to Microeconomics 

Introduction to Statistics

Students should understand the basic framework of probability and statistical theory, including displaying and describing data, relationships in data, design of experiments, causation, random sampling, probability, statistical inference, confidence intervals, tests of hypotheses, and regression and correlation.

UVA courses that satisfy the prerequisite for Introduction to Statistics include:

STAT 1120: Introduction to Statistics (This course is typically not offered. Credit for this course is given for a score of 4 on the AP Exam.)

STAT 2020: Statistics for Biologists 

STAT 2120: Introduction to Statistical Analysis 

APMA 3110: Applied Statistics and Probability 

APMA 3120: Statistics

ECON 3720: Introduction to Econometrics 

EDLF 2080: Fundamentals of Health and Social Sciences Statistics 

EVSC 5030: Applies Statistics for Environmental Science

LPPA 3640: Research Methods and Data Analysis in Public Policy 

PSYC 2005: Research Methods and Data Analysis I 

SOC 3120: Sociology Research Methods 

SOC 3130: Introduction to Social Statistics

UVA students who have successfully completed the McIntire General Business Minor will satisfy the prerequisite course requirements needed to enroll in the M.S. in Commerce Program.

Applicants pursuing or holding a business minor from another college or university are required to submit documentation of their minor curriculum (e.g., academic plan or course list) prior to application to mcintiregrad@virginia.edu to confirm eligibility. Course syllabi may be requested if additional verification is needed.

Prerequisite coursework is not required to apply for admission but must be completed by Aug. 1, prior to matriculation.
