Student Support

CIFM prepares UVA students to compete for the most demanding roles in finance — investment banking, private equity and private credit, private banking, asset management, sales and trading, and restructuring. Through Finance Academy, employer treks to New York and San Francisco, ten student-run investment clubs, national case competitions, and access to the data platforms the industry runs on, students build the skills and the network that turn an interest in finance into an internship, and an internship into a full-time offer.

Recruiting for third-year finance internships begins early in the second year, before most students have taken a finance course. The UVA Finance Academy closes that gap: a free, year-long program open to second-years in every UVA school, combining faculty lectures, a three-day investment banking bootcamp, alumni interview prep, and treks to more than 20 hiring firms. Finance Academy attendance has more than tripled in size since 2022, with roughly 60% of participants securing finance internships.

Finance Academy is supported by CIFM and corporate sponsor Quad-C Management, Inc.

Careers in Finance

Not sure which corner of finance fits you? The Careers in Finance program brings professionals to Grounds to describe what their work actually involves — investment banking, sales and trading, asset management, private equity and private credit, wealth management — and how they got there. Careers in Finance takes place across the fall semester with weekly programs open to any UVA student. First- and second-years are the core audience, and for many students, this is their first real look inside the industry.

Careers in Finance is hosted by CIFM and Commerce Career Services. Sign-ups are via Handshake.

Student Competition Support

McIntire student teams compete, and win, on the national stage. In 2025-2026, our students took first place at the ABI Corporate Restructuring Competition (besting top MBA programs) and in Oaktree’s Future Leaders Credit Case Challenge, and CIFM hosted the inaugural UVA CRX Credit Pitch Competition on Grounds.
