Eligibility

A rigorous and varied liberal arts education is critical to your success at McIntire. For academic year 2024-2025, we will be accepting applications from students who have completed two years of coursework before enrolling, as well as our first class of second-year-entry students applying after their first year.

After admission, World Language prerequisites may, with prior approval, be completed by transfer during the summer before enrollment, but must be completed before entering the McIntire School.

We want our applicants to bring a diversity of experience, background, and skills; possess intellectual curiosity; be academically prepared; be highly engaged with UVA, Charlottesville, and the global community; and demonstrate emotional intelligence.

Advising Recommendations

Our advisers can talk to you about your interests and help you chart your path to McIntire. Everyone's path is different, but some general guidelines include:

Take a full course load (between 14-16 credits) each semester.
Challenge yourself with rigorous courses.
Hone your oral and written communication, ethics and moral reasoning, global perspective, qualitative skill set, and creative and critical thinking.
Stay on track to complete your schools of enrollment's academic requirements.
Explore majors and electives.
Create a balanced schedule by spreading out the quantitative prerequisites for four semesters.
Participate in co-curricular and work activities to hone important skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I am a second-year student, which Calculus course should I take?

Several Calculus sequences are taught at UVA, and every student's path is different. Get more information on the many ways to successfully complete this requirement.

I’m a student with AP credit for Statistics/a transfer student who has taken Statistics. I’ve heard that first- and second-year UVA students learn coding (Python) as part of STAT 2120 to gain coding proficiency. What do I need to know?

All students who enter the McIntire School should have a basic proficiency in a general purpose coding language: Python (preferred), R, C++, or Java. Visit this page to learn more about why proficiency in coding is necessary and how you can become proficient.

Do I already have credit for one of the above prerequisite courses?

The McIntire School accepts the same Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, SAT II credit, course waivers, transfer credits, and exemptions as other schools at the University of Virginia. Learn more about advanced examination credit awarded here.

Which grading options count toward the credit requirements and prerequisites for the B.S. in Commerce?

Courses completed for a grade of COVID CR/GC and a passing letter grade will count toward the 54-credit requirement and prerequisites needed for the B.S. in Commerce Program. Visit the grading options page to learn more about how grading choices are considered in your application.

I'm thinking of taking an equivalent or substitute of a prerequisite at UVA or via transfer credit at another college or university. Do I need approval?

Equivalents or substitutions of any prerequisites taken at the University or elsewhere should be approved in advance. If a course is in the College of Arts & Sciences, please contact the appropriate Undergraduate Program for approval. If a course is in the School of Commerce (course with a COMM mnemonic), send the course description to the McIntire Registrar at agb4k@virginia.edu for approval. The McIntire Office of Undergraduate Admission is available to advise students who wish to take prerequisite courses elsewhere.

I’m an Echols Scholar. Aren’t I exempt from many of the prerequisite courses?

Echols Scholars intending to apply to McIntire must complete all of the prerequisite courses. However, instead of taking a First Writing Requirement course, Echols Scholars may fulfill McIntire's writing prerequisite by taking ENWR 2520 or any other ENWR class above the 2520 level.

What other classes do I need to take for entry to McIntire?

The prerequisite courses, when taken in conjunction with the broad course requirements of the College curriculum, prepare students for McIntire’s intensive ICE curriculum, concentrations, and tracks. If students are looking for additional skill development, the following can serve as a guide:

Students are encouraged to take courses that emphasize oral and written communication skills as well as courses that emphasize moral reasoning and ethics.
Students planning to concentrate in Finance are strongly encouraged to complete additional elective coursework in mathematics, particularly if they received AP or transfer credit for the math requirement.
